Friendship

Someone once said, “You don’t get to choose your family, but you get to choose your friends.” If you have ever heard me speak on the topic of The Thickness of Water, you would know I agree and disagree with this statement. My point is just because you are related, you don’t always relate to one another. Friendships are built on shared experiences and as life goes on, we look to see who is there supporting and encouraging us. These friendships often become stronger than family bonds. I was at an event recently and overheard friends talking of how they had known each other for years, watched each other’s children grow up, and even saw each other become grandparents.

Since you get a choice in the matter, choose your friends wisely. Remember, people come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Friendships should be mutually supporting, so don’t force them when they are not. In the end, your friends may be the only family you have.
